I’ve Heard Infertility Therapy Is Expensive And Not Very Successful

It’s a misconception that all infertility therapy is expensive and not very successful. In fact, the cost of most fertility therapies is covered by your provincial health care plan.

Treatment can be as simple as lifestyle education and counselling, regulating a woman’s menstrual cycle, or using artificial insemination to compensate for low sperm counts. Even relatively complicated treatments such as surgery to repair fallopian tubes, or laser treatment to clear endometriosis, are covered. Much of the time, these kinds of treatments are all a couple requires.

That said, it’s true OHIP does not cover In Vitro Fertilization, and a couple is required to cover the expense of this therapy. Thankfully, with today’s advanced reproductive technologies, IVF is now a very successful treatment. These days, some couples can expect as high as a 70% to 80% success rate with some forms of IVF. If your doctor has recommended you see a fertility specialist but you’ve hesitated because of these fears, you should know your initial consultation is covered by OHIP, and most first-time patients leave our offices feeling educated, reassured and hopeful.
